Lesson notes
Pole and flag
A flag starts with a flagpole: a strong, fast move. Then price drifts in a small channel against that move: the flag. A bull flag drifts down after a rally; a bear flag drifts up after a drop.
Which flags to trade
- The pole must be strong (big candles, little overlap).
- The flag should be short and shallow, ideally retracing less than half of the pole.
- Trade flags in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend.
- Skip flags that form right into a major level.
Entry, stop and target
- Enter after a candle closes out of the flag in the pole's direction.
- Stop loss beyond the opposite side of the flag.
- Target: the length of the pole, projected from the breakout.
Khulasa (Roman Urdu / Hindi)
- Flag = strong move (pole) + chhota sa rukna (flag).
- Bull flag rally ke baad neeche jhukta hai.
- Sirf mazboot pole aur chhote flag wale setups.
- Target: pole ki lambai, breakout se.
Questions
What is a flag pattern?
A short consolidation that slopes against a strong move (the pole) and usually breaks out in the direction of that move.
Is a bull flag bullish?
Yes. A bull flag is a continuation pattern in an uptrend.
How do you calculate the flag pattern target?
Measure the flagpole and project that length from the breakout point.
What is the difference between a flag and a pennant?
A flag is a small parallel channel; a pennant is a small symmetrical triangle. Both follow a strong pole.
Where do I put the stop loss in a flag trade?
Beyond the opposite side of the flag, or beyond its last swing.
Why do flag patterns fail?
Weak poles, deep flags, trading against the higher-timeframe trend or into a major level.
