Lesson notes

The parts of MACD

MACD is built from two exponential moving averages, commonly 12 and 26. The MACD line is their difference; the signal line is usually a 9-period EMA of the MACD line; the histogram shows the gap between the two.

The crossover

  • Buy signal: the MACD line crosses above the signal line.
  • Sell signal: the MACD line crosses below the signal line.
  • Crossovers above zero favour buys; below zero favour sells.

The weakness and the fix

MACD is calculated from moving averages, so it lags. In weak or ranging markets it gives many late and false crossovers. Take MACD signals only in the direction of the trend and near a support or resistance level, and use a price action candle for the actual entry.

Khulasa (Roman Urdu / Hindi)

  • MACD: 12 aur 26 EMA ka farq, signal line 9 EMA.
  • MACD line signal ke oopar cross kare to buy, neeche to sell.
  • MACD lag karta hai; range mein false signals.
  • Trend + level + price action candle ke saath use karein.

Questions

What are the best MACD settings?

The standard 12, 26, 9 is the most used. Changing settings rarely fixes the lag; filtering with price action helps more.

How do you read a MACD crossover?

When the MACD line crosses above the signal line it is bullish; below, bearish.

Is MACD a leading or lagging indicator?

Lagging. It is built from moving averages, so it confirms moves after they start.

What does the MACD histogram show?

The distance between the MACD line and the signal line; growing bars show strengthening momentum.

Can MACD show divergence?

Yes. Price making a new high while MACD makes a lower high is bearish divergence, and the reverse is bullish.

Which timeframe is best for MACD?

It works on any timeframe; H1 and H4 give fewer false signals than M1–M5.
