What is leverage in forex? Margin and risk explained

Leverage lets you open a large position with a small deposit. It is useful, and it is the main reason beginners lose accounts quickly. Here is exactly how it works.

A fixed risk on every trade and a stop loss you place first. Protecting the account comes before everything else.

How Dr. Qazi teaches

Leverage and margin

With leverage of 1:100, every $1 of margin controls $100 of position. Margin is the deposit the broker sets aside while the trade is open.

Example: 1 lot EURUSD at 1.1000 is a position worth $110,000. At 1:100 the margin is $1,100; at 1:500 it is $220.

What leverage does not change

Leverage changes how much margin a trade needs. It does not change the pip value: 1 lot EURUSD is still about $10 per pip at 1:30 or at 1:1000. The danger is that high leverage lets you open a position far too large for your account.

Margin needed for 1 lot EURUSD at different leverage. The risk per pip does not change.

Margin call and stop out

  • Margin level = equity ÷ used margin × 100%.
  • When it falls to the broker's margin call level, you are warned or cannot open new trades.
  • At the stop out level, the broker starts closing your trades. Levels differ by broker, so check yours.

Regulators and limits

Many regulators cap retail leverage: in the EU and UK the cap for major currency pairs is 1:30, and in the US it is 1:50. Offshore brokers often offer much higher leverage. Whatever is offered, size each trade from your risk, not from the available margin.

Khulasa (Roman Urdu / Hindi)

  • Leverage se kam margin par bari position khulti hai.
  • 1 lot EURUSD @1.1000: 1:100 par $1,100 margin, 1:500 par $220.
  • Leverage pip value nahi badalta; lot hi risk badalta hai.
  • Margin call aur stop out levels broker ke mutabiq.

Questions

What is the best leverage for beginners?

Low leverage is safer, but what protects you is the lot size: risk a small fixed percentage per trade whatever leverage you have.

Is 1:500 leverage dangerous?

The leverage itself does not lose money; opening positions too large for the account does. High leverage makes that mistake easy.

How is margin calculated?

Margin = position value ÷ leverage. 1 lot EURUSD at 1.10 with 1:100 needs about $1,100.

What is a margin call in forex?

A warning when your margin level falls to the broker's set level; at the stop-out level trades start closing automatically.

Does leverage affect pip value?

No. Pip value depends on the lot size and the pair, not on leverage.

What leverage do regulators allow?

For retail traders on major pairs, 1:30 in the EU and UK and 1:50 in the US; other regions differ.
