Swap in one line
Swap (also called rollover) is the interest adjustment for keeping a position open overnight. It comes from the difference between the interest rates of the two currencies, plus the broker's markup. Because of the markup, on many pairs both buy and sell pay a small swap.
When it is charged
Swap is applied at the broker's daily rollover, usually 5:00 PM New York time: about 2:00 AM Pakistan time in summer and 3:00 AM in winter (2:30 / 3:30 AM IST). Only positions open at that moment pay or receive it; a trade opened and closed the same day has no swap.
On Wednesday night most brokers apply three days of swap on forex, and usually on Gold. Spot currency settles two business days after the trade, so a position held past Wednesday's rollover settles on Monday and carries the weekend. Some brokers use a different triple day for indices or crypto; MetaTrader shows it as 3-days swap in the symbol specification.
How to find and calculate it in MT5
In Market Watch, right-click the symbol → Specification. Look at Swap type, Swap long (buy) and Swap short (sell).
If the swap is in points: swap per night = swap points × value of one point × lots. Example with an illustrative value: EURUSD swap long −6.2 points; on a 5-digit price one point is $1 per lot, so 1 lot pays $6.20 a night, 0.10 lot pays $0.62, and Wednesday's triple swap on 0.10 lot is $1.86. Your broker's numbers change with interest rates, so always check the live specification.
Who should care about swap
- Scalpers and day traders who close before the rollover never pay it.
- Swing traders holding for days or weeks should include it in the cost; on a long-held Gold trade it can add up to a noticeable amount.
- A positive swap (when you hold the higher-yielding currency) is what the "carry trade" relies on, but price moves usually matter far more than the swap.
Swap-free accounts
Many brokers offer swap-free accounts that remove the overnight interest. In return some charge a fixed administration fee after a number of nights, widen spreads, or limit how long a trade can stay open; read the terms.
Khulasa (Roman Urdu / Hindi)
- Swap: raat bhar trade khuli rakhne par interest ka farq (plus broker markup).
- Rollover New York 5 PM = PKT raat ~2 baje (garmi) / 3 baje (sardi); usi waqt khuli trade par lagta hai.
- Budh (Wednesday) ki raat aksar 3 din ka swap (weekend ki wajah se).
- MT5: symbol par right-click → Specification → Swap long/short.
- Swap-free account mein swap nahi, magar fee ya bara spread ho sakta hai: terms parhein.
